Film Poster

MY FILM POSTER

Here i used an image which I extracted from my moving image shots. I decided to do this rather than using a photo as i felt it captured the action rather than a still, posed shot. Once I extracted the image I played with the hue and saturation and then the contrast to make the shadows more intense and successfully recreate the sense of night time as all the shots (except the shots around the camp fire) were filmed during the day and later colour corrected to appear as night. By doing this it allowed me to show night time with more detail and precision than if taken during actual the night in the absence of much light.

EXAMPLE FILM POSTER

This is the teaser poster for the film Shrooms, which is similar in genre to my film trailer therefore saw this poster as a suitable source of research and inspiration for my own poster. The key features in this poster are: the presence of a focal and emotive image, the film title, a tag line, reviews from other media based companies (usually popular magazines or newspapers), certificate rating and a release date. The consistent linking between the composition of the poster is the blurring font, which compliments the focal image of a skull created as a supposed illusion of mushrooms conveniently places in front of a large and ominous full moon. The splash of red writing in the colour scheme adds a useful contrast to all the blues and blacks, giving it an interesting overall composition.

Magazine Feature

MY FINAL MAGAZINE FEATURE

This is my final magazine feature front cover. To create the merged image that is the focal point of the cover I selected and cut three different images of my characters and used the smudge tool to distort the images. After this I used the eraser set with no hard lines to blend the image into the background, therefore creating the ghostly illusion of the morphed figures emerging from the woods. I later added the text in complementing fonts to complete the final authenticity of the appearance.

This was the first draft of my final magazine. After evaluating the overall composition of the piece I decided that in order to give the front cover a more authentic appearance I added more cover stories and changed the 'HORROR SPECIAL' into black with a light glow outline rather than the simple red from before. I felt this helped the issue title stand out more from the rest of the cover stories, highlighting it as separate to the stories and part of the magazine title.

EXAMPLE MAGAZINE FEATURES

- EMPIRE MAGAZINE

Here i have two examples of different labels of film magazines, both of which showing a cover feature of the same film. However, both Empire and Total Film have different layout styles, each consisting of similarities ad differences in key features.

In Empire Magazine they have featured only three or four cover stories and added a puff at the bottom of the page briefly describing other stories of interest. As for the main cover story, the film title is in the largest font and placed almost directly in the middle of the page causing it to be - literally - the center of attention. The colour scheme consists of mainly reds, whites and blacks within the font, giving it a distinctive style which will be recognisably to their average audience. With the magazine title, as the brand of magazine is so well known they can afford to cover up a section of it with the focal image as it will still be recognisable to the consumer.

- TOTAL FILM MAGAZINE

In Total Film Magazine the layout is similar to Empire in its choice of presenting a small number of only four main stories on the cover though differs in layout style with how the brief additional attraction is shown in the skyline above the masthead partnered with images to establish the most interesting parts. The key feature which run throughout are: the presence of a small collection of three or four cover stories, a focal image which covers a small part of the magazine title (masthead), a briefly added additional attraction to lure the consumer into buying the magazine.

Change of Plan!

Due to complications during casting for my trailer, whilst trying to find a suitable child to star, I encountered some problems with parental consent, therefore could not go ahead with my original theme of children in horror. However, after some additional brainstorming I have tweaked my theme to consist of teenagers in horror as a compromise. Despite this change I actually feel that it has improved my storyline rather than limit it and caused the storyboard to expand and grow.

Due to this sudden change I decided to research some films more suited to my new focal point of teens. During my research into teen horrors I came across this trailer for a film called Shrooms. This was an inspiring trailer as it highlighted how scary the woods can get at night, therefore becoming a forefront for my own trailer. Linking back to the 'children' in horror I decided that maybe the use of the 'Teddybear's Picnic' theme tune would work here as it relates to horror in the woods. From this point i have decided to incorporate it into my planning.
