Children in Horror - Mindmap

Effective Camera Shots and Editing in Horror Trailers

- Jump cut
Where consecutive camera shots are cut from one moment in time to
possibly an hour or so later
- Discontinuous editing
- Montage
- Fade through black
- Text/Voice over
- Long shot to close up (very few middle shots)
Creates the enigma code of what happens in between shots e.g. Setting(long shot)to Reaction to something(close up)Enigma code: What is he/she reacting to?
- POV/handheld POV
This allows the shot to appear from a characters point of view. In horror this could be used in a chase scene as the victim runs away/tries to escape panicked, or even the victim looking out at the threat from a hiding place/threat looking into the victims hiding place

Teaser Trailer Research

COMMON FEATURES

- Trailer length: (Always shorter than feature length though time length not much relevant, teaser and feature trailers are distinguished more by editing style and content)
- Shorter than feature length trailer (even if only marginally)
- Doesn't show too much of the narrative (if any)
- Faster pace
- Engima code (cliff hanger)
- Establish genre
- Creates atmosphere
- Must establish at least 3 of these: Who? What? Where? When? Why?

SIGNIFICANT CAMERA SHOTS/ANGLES/EDITING

- Extreme close up of face (usually eyes or mouth) - exaggerates facial expression making it look much more frightening.
- The Omen teaser trailer - long continuous shot - creates a sense of suspense.
- Flashing shots - gives a lot of suggestions in a short amount of time - creates a tense feeling, e.g. bracing yourself.
- Syncing the shot editing with the rhythm and soundtrack of a heartbeat - creates a feeling of suspense.

EFFECTIVE LOCATIONS

- The woods
- Haunted House
- Ghost Town
- Your own home

EFFECTIVENESS OF VARIOUS SOUNDTRACKS/VOICE OVERS

- Deep voice hollywood voice over - gives the trailer a more upper budget feel and suggests more drama.
- Short voice over at beginning left to define the rest of the trailer. Creates a sense of getting only part of the story, leaves viewer craving to know more. Very Effective.
- Syncing shot with soundtrack of heartbeat - create a sense of suspense.
- Xylophone music - idyllic sound though the irony of 'devil child' causes the music to instantly become spine chilling.

Trailer - examples

Whilst looking through teaser trialers on Youtube for research I found that I was intrigued most by the horror ones and how only a small amount of footage could cause almost maximum inpact on the audience. This technique convinced me to chose this genre for my own trailer. From this o focused on a sub category of this genre, children, as I found these were some of the most effective and scariest trailers I had watched, especially when the child was not portrayed as the victim. During my research I found several trailers effectively presenting children as the monster rather than the victim. These were:

- 'Silent Hill' - Alessa
- 'The Omen' - Damien
- 'The Grudge' - Little chinese boy
- 'The Ring' - Samara
- 'Villiage of the Damned' - all the children
- 'Death of a Ghost Hunter' - little ghost girl

The two trailers I have analysed are:

- 'Then Omen'
- 'Silent Hill'

I have done this in order to gain an understanding of then necessary content of a teaser trailer in comparison to a normal feature length trailer.
